This range needs some serious upgrades. Send someone to the Lee Kay rifle range in Salt Lake City to see how it's done. Most of the time is spent waiting for one guy to walk out to the 300 yard mark to set a target instead of shooting.

The critical comments of BASF ARE NOT in error. The biggest problem is the AZ Game & Fish employees who work there. They are arrogant, unprofessional, and walk around as if they own the place. I have learned that the "Range" is a very coveted assignment for those employees out there. So if you have a problem, write the Governor's office. Believe me, after a few complaints get to that level, things will change very, very quickly.

This is the most worthless range in the entire State of Arizona. Most of the ranges at Ben Avery are closed to the public, and are only open when the local shooting clubs are holding a sanctioned match. The general public is herded like sheep into a small KD range where a fee is paid, you take a number, watch a safety video/range brief, and then wait an hour to be assigned a firing lane. Then an employee will instruct you over a loudspeaker when to place your target, when to load, when to cease fire and when you can check your target, etc. This overcrowded, overstructured and overbearing range management is more of a detriment than a benifit in recruiting new shooters, and the new shooters that I made the mistake of bringing to this range were totally turned off to shooting afterward.

Add to all this the fact that the range is closed at odd hours during the summer months and of course all Mondays and Holidays, etc.

I have shot in numerous competitive disciplines and won several trophies, so I'm no stranger to structured shooting, but the empty ranges combined with the overcrowding and overly strict nature of this facility upset me to say the least. If public Hunting License dollars are going to fund this range, it should be open to the public. It angers me to think that the money I spent on a hunting license is funding this facility.

If anyone wonders why the general public destroys Table Mesa instead of going to a structured range, they need look no further for a reason than the poorly run Ben Avery facility.

The poorly thought out criticism of the Ben Avery Shooting Facility is in error. The facility is one of the best managed, user friendly facilities in the country. It's goals are to be open and friendly to the public and to
be safe. The structure in place is to keep the
public safe while they enjoy the shooting sports.
Come see us and talk about any dissatisfaction with our management.

I have been going to Ben Avery for 10 years. I used to love it. Now I have finally had it with the place. The rangemasters used to be a good bunch of guys, well-experienced, professional, and tough but not insulting. I have every respect for the old timers that used to run the range. Lately, it's been a different group. They hover over your shoulder needlessly and take advantage of any excuse to scream (yes, SCREAM) at you when a reasonable warning would suffice. It is entirely unprofessional. And before you say anything, I am not talking about safety infractions. I have always been delighted when they promptly and thoroughly stop some schmuck from getting people hurt while being careless. I'm talking about the scolding you get for how an empty rifle case is handled. One guy said it best: arrogant. Not "safe." Arrogant. The chewing out I got today for a minor nonsafety infraction went on uninterrupted for five full minutes less than a foot from my face. There is no excuse for this, but I cooperated fully. It was flat out insulting and I don't intend to return to my favorite range for a very long time if that's the way it is being run these days. I will not be disrespected in that way again.

pretty crowded and is more like going to a dissorganized function and paying too much. I much prefer to go out in the desert and shoot at my own leisure, however if you choose to go out on your own trip to the desert please be respectful and PICK UP YOUR MESS! Just because the ranges provided suck does not give any excuse to trash someplace else. Table Mesa for example is great , but too many lazy people leave behind trash and they are to stupid ( or uneducated enough ) to realize that the state can and will and should ( if this continues ) shut off public shooting. Again please pick up after yourselves it is a priveledge to have such a place. Thanks
