Here are some photos of two older AR-15 rifles side by side, an SP1 Sporter (Rifle with triangular handguards) and an SP1 Sporter with collapsible stock (Carbine with ribbed short handguards). These are two early AR-15 rifles made by Colt between 1964 and 1985.

These AR-15 rifles have A1 lower receivers. The upper receivers on these SP-1 models have no Forward Assist, and no Expended Case Defector. They have built in carry handles with A1 style rear sights. The full size SP1 Sporter has a 20-inch barrel while the SP1 Carbine has a 16-inch barrel, both are 1:12 twist. The Carbine weighs 5.8-pounds (empty) and the Sporter weighs 7.5-pounds. These are interesting and lightweight AR15 variants. Finding unfired samples this old is a rare treat, and we were happy to get the chance to photograph them together
